The Ringer is seeking fact checkers to support its editorial department in Los Angeles, CA. A fact checker’s chief responsibility will be supporting the copy desk in maintaining its high standards in publishing accurate, well-vetted content. This person will work closely with editors and writers to deliver pieces covering topics that drive the Ringer universe: sports, pop culture, technology, politics, food, and more.
Responsibilities
- Fact-checking daily content and features
- Providing writers, editors, and multimedia producers with research assistance
- Using the Chorus CMS to produce blog posts, features, and other pages for The Ringer’s dot-com property
- Directly communicating with tact to editors, writers, and producers to ensure necessary edits are completed correctly
- Providing general administrative support as needed
Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree in journalism or another related field
- At least one year’s experience fact checking for a professional website, magazine, newspaper, or other publication
- Experience with web-page production and common content management systems
- A deep knowledge of sports and sports statistics, pop culture, tech, and current events
- Comfort and familiarity with online research resources
- A commitment to accuracy and rigorous attention to detail
- A genuine love of research
- The ability to meet tight deadlines and thrive under pressure, including working evenings and weekends if necessary
- The ability to keep track of multiple simultaneous projects
- Familiarity with journalism best practices, ethics, and law
- High-level communication, critical-reading, and writing skills
