The Ringer Seeks a Senior Sports Editor

The Ringer

The Ringer is seeking a senior sports editor with a focus on the NFL to manage columnists and seasonal beats, coordinate breaking news coverage, and develop written storytelling in its Los Angeles–based editorial headquarters. This position will work closely with writers and editors on staff to deliver a wide swath of pieces covering sports.

Responsibilities

● Work closely with writers and editors in developing story ideas and executing weekly coverage

● Act as edit lead or edit support for a range of sports-specific projects, from theme week packages to stand-alone stories, feature profiles, trend pieces, oral histories, and beyond

● Manage an editorial calendar and freelance budget

● Collaborate with editorial departments—including section editors, art, and copy desk—to execute stories from conception to publication

● Develop and advise in audio and video projects connected to beats

● Aid in the planning of content scheduling and production development

● Most importantly, make smart, creative, industry-leading work you’re proud of

Requirements

● Minimum of five years’ experience editing in digital or magazine journalism

● Deep understanding of news and story lines, with sound journalistic ethics and judgment

● In-season commitment to the beat, which includes work on nights and most weekends

● Connectivity to a collection of available and eager freelance writing talent

● Strong writing skills, including a capacity for clever and SEO-friendly headlines

● Ability to meet tight deadlines and thrive under pressure

● Extensive knowledge of and curiosity about sports and pop culture

● An enthusiasm for The Ringer’s content
