The Takeaway
The Player
McCoy might have the best man-coverage skills in this draft. He gets in and out of breaks well, especially for a corner with his frame, and his body control and balance make it difficult for bigger receivers to separate using their size and strength. He can smother receivers in press coverage and has the ability to turn and run vertically. However, he was beaten over the top a few times on his 2024 tape, and he doesn’t appear to have elite recovery speed when caught out of phase. He can also fall off tackles at times and will occasionally use the hip-drop tackling technique.
A former high school receiver (57 catches for 784 yards as a senior), he shows natural ball skills and has the profile of a ball hawk. McCoy led Oregon State in passes defended in 2023 and Tennessee in passes defended in 2024. He triggers quickly when receivers break, tracks the ball well, and closes effectively on throws. He consistently breaks up passes despite slightly below-average arm length.
McCoy is essentially a redshirt sophomore who started five games as a freshman at Oregon State in 2023 and 13 games at Tennessee in 2024. He sustained a torn ACL while training in January 2025, which caused him to miss the 2025 season, the Senior Bowl, and workouts at the combine. Speaking at the combine, he said that he is fully healed and expects to perform at his pro day.
The Draft
McCoy’s inability to return to the field and/or work out for teams since sustaining a torn ACL in January of 2025 raises questions regarding the status of his knee injury. It’s also prevented him from showing teams that his top-end speed isn’t a concern. He’s still the second corner on our board and should be a first-rounder based on his tape, ball production, and upside.
The Projection
Derek Stingley Jr. (the 2022 third pick) was a playmaker with strong man coverage skills like McCoy, and there were concerns about his durability and consistency coming out. McCoy doesn’t appear to be as naturally gifted as Stingley, but he has the traits to compete for a starting role as a rookie if he’s healthy and continues to develop.
