The Takeaway

The Player

Sellers is in his fourth season at South Carolina. He redshirted in 2023, appearing in three games without making a start, before taking over as the full-time starter the past two seasons. He started 12 of 13 games in 2024 and all 12 games he played in 2025, giving him 24 career starts entering the 2026 season.

The 2025 campaign was a frustrating one, largely because of injury and an awkward fit in Mike Shula’s offense. Sellers sprained his ankle late in the first half against LSU in October, forcing him to miss the remainder of that game and the following week’s matchup against Akron. His best pre-injury tape came against Missouri and Vanderbilt, while his strongest performance after returning was against Texas A&M. By the end of the season, he looked much closer to full strength in impressive outings against Clemson and Illinois. He’ll have his third offensive coordinator in four seasons in 2026, as Kendal Briles takes over after Dowell Loggains (2023-24) and Shula (2025).

Sellers possesses two truly elite physical traits: arm talent and mobility. The ball explodes off his hand with effortless velocity, and he generates outstanding arm energy without having to strain. He can drive the football vertically with ease, rip deep outs from the opposite hash, and fit throws into tight windows that few college quarterbacks would even target. His release is quick and natural, and the ball carries plenty of late life.

The next step in his development is improving his short to intermediate accuracy and touch. Too often, Sellers throws underneath passes with unnecessary velocity instead of layering the football. He also has a tendency to miss high, creating interception opportunities on tipped passes or balls that sail over the middle of the field. Those mechanical inconsistencies are his biggest obstacle to becoming a complete quarterback. 

The Projection

Sellers is the most physically gifted quarterback in the class and a more polished passer than he gets credit for. A shorter Josh Allen is the best present-day comparison, with some throwback shades of Daunte Culpepper. He’s currently a top-10 prospect, but he needs a healthier, smoother year under new offensive coordinator Kendal Briles in 2026. The talent is undeniable, and I’m not willing to rule out Sellers emerging as the no. 1 overall pick in the 2027 draft.
