NikolaJokic

Preseason question: The Nuggets ask a lot of Jokic: to run the offense; to hold down the defense; to lead the team in points, rebounds, and assists; and to make life easy for everyone else, all while converting the most difficult plays himself. Jokic makes so much possible that the Nuggets can wind up relying on him for everything. But at what cost? Denver has to better balance its 82-game interests with its 16-game interests, and Jokic has to make the most of his influence without wearing himself down. It’s a tough line to walk, but if anyone can, it’s him. No player does more to turn a slight advantage into an opponent’s five-alarm fire. Few can shoot over the top of or throw passes around defenders with such ease. Jokic has the vision and skill to pace himself as needed, yet the particulars of Denver’s roster—through its build and injuries—haven’t always allowed it. Everything Jokic and the Nuggets are playing for rides on finding a new balance.
