Saulsberry shines in Gainesville
By Kevin Ledford | 4/25/10 | Email

Last weekend, the Nike Football Training Camp made it’s way through Gainesville, Florida and it was one of Gainesville’s own that made perhaps the biggest splash. Trevarris Saulsberry exploded onto the scene in his own backyard as the 6’4”, 260-pound defensive lineman from Gainesville High stole the show.

“We did agility, competition stuff. That’s about it. We tested their equipment, like the Nike equipment they sell, and so we did some drills with their Nike equipment,” Saulsberry says. Trevarris performed exceptionally well by all accounts in those drills and didn’t lose a single battle in the one-on-one portion of the camp against some of the top offensive lineman in the area.

The Hurricanes are coming off a 10-2 season and must replace several key players from that squad including stars Kevin Nelson at linebacker and Devont’a Davis in the defensive backfield. But Trevarris intends to take on a leadership role and insists that they’re ready for the challenge.

“Oh we’re looking good. Real good. We have (LB) Ismael Durr and (DB) Luis Rosado stepping in for them (Nelson and Davis).”

Trevarris’ performance at the Gainesville NFTC supports his case that the Hurricanes will be just fine. He’s aware of the fact that opponents will be paying extra attention to him and that he’ll be seeing plenty of double teams, but that’s nothing new to him. “I got a lot of those last year, “ Saulsberry chuckles.

As for recruiting, Trevarris currently holds offers from FIU, USF, Marshall, Iowa State and North Carolina A&T and is sure to add many more to those. He’s caught the attention of several schools and is hearing from Georgia, Arkansas, Florida State, Florida and Miami. Though he lives in Gainesville, Saulsberry grew up a Florida State fan but says he’s approaching the recruiting process with an open mind.

“I’m just weighing my options out right now. Any offers that’ll come in, I’ll take. I‘m just trying to visit schools and see how I get a feel for it and the coaches and see how the program works.”

However, there is one particular school that he hasn’t heard from yet that he would like to. “Somewhat Clemson. I don’t know, there’s just something that draws me towards it.”

Trevarris says the main factors in his decision will be “the pharmacy program and how the defense is.”

He plays defensive end, defensive tackle and tight end for the Hurricanes and says that he’s being recruited as defensive end and defensive tackle. As for where he prefers to play, Trevarris says, “Defensive end right now because that’s what I’m used to but if I can get used to defensive tackle, I’ll play anything.”

Judging by his performance at the Gainesville NFTC, Saulsberry can play wherever he wants.

Daniels plans to take his time

Every recruit and recruitnik alike knows how crazy college football recruiting can become. For some it's crazier than others and for some the 'crazy' is what makes the experience so much fun. Vernon Hills (Illinois) wide receiver prospect Davaris Daniels would be one of the 'some' on both counts.

Looking for another championship

Last season was a high school quarterback’s dream for Dwyer High (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) QB Jacoby Brissett. He led the Panthers to the 4A State Championship while distributing the ball to playmakers like Matt Elam, Gerald Christian, Robert Clark and Nick O’Leary.

Straight talk with Curt Evans

Hollywood (FL) rising soon to be senior wide receiver Curt Evans is a young man who is efficient with his language.  That doesn’t mean that he has little to say.  However, when he does have something to communicate, he tends to get straight to the heart of it with well chosen and meaning-filled words.
