The pen is mightier than the stiff-arm?
By Smith | 4/14/10 | Email

Jersey City, NJ running back Savon Huggins is one guy who is tough to pin down on the football field. As evidenced by his 25+ scholarship offers to play ball for the cream of the NCAA crop. The thought never occurred to him that people would have the same kind of trouble capturing his words when it comes to giving interviews about his recruitment. Unfortunately that’s already been the case on more than one occasion according to his father, Wendell Huggins.

“We had a big issue with that last year when he gave an interview to a guy and some how or another, it came out that Penn State is in his top 3. I'm like whoa, whoa, whoa! Who said anything about a top 3? I called the guy back and he explained to me that it wasn't him. That his editor was the one who chose to put that title on it,” said the senior Huggins.

This leads me to the reason I made contact with the Huggins’ to request an interview. An article was published by another recruiting site the day prior with this direct quote from Savon, “Georgia and Ohio State are a couple of the most recent ones to offer.” As one of the Midwest contributors for ThaRinger, I wanted to get his thoughts on being offered by Ohio State.

“No, they haven’t offered. They're showing a lot of interest and sending a lot of mail though. Word is they're going to offer but he does not have an offer from Ohio State yet,” answered his dad.

Mr. Huggins didn’t mince his words any when giving an opinion on how the interview in question was handled either, “He explained to the guy before they hung up that he made a mistake, that he did not have the offer, but that they are thinking of offering him. So I told Savon, you have to really start watching what you do now. Because some of these guys, they’ll put a whole bunch of stuff out cause they want to make a story. Make it juicier than it is. So I said, I'll talk to whoever first and then I'll give you the yea or nay to converse with them.”

Any parent could empathize. The old saying of having a child is like having your heart walking around in the world comes to mind. The smallest slight or snub can bring about an instinctual reaction to protect those we care about. The senior Huggins is no different.

“I want him to enjoy this whole process. You know? But the minute that I feel that it's a little bit too much for him, I might just change the phone number. Because, he's still in school, he has exams coming up. He doesn't need to be losing his focus right now. I mean, that time is going to come. You know, when summer time comes. Then our process will be to eliminate some schools we know he's not interested in. Just so that we don't get bombarded. Cause I know that’s coming soon,” said Huggins.

Soon is right, by the way. Soon as in any day now depending on when you’re reading this. Unfortunately, thanks to a miscommunication, the Huggins’ were under the impression that it would practically be the end of the school year before recruiting really kicked in. Huggins explained, “I'm hearing that the blackout period is lifted starting on the 15th of April. That’s when they (coaches) can start calling and even visiting. I was not aware of that. Someone had told me it didn't start til the end of May but one of the coaches just told me it actually starts on the 15th of April.”

Don’t think for a second though that Mr. Huggins is anything less than thankful for the position his son is in. “He called me a few minutes ago to tell me that he spoke with USC today. He's supposed to be getting some information from them shortly. You never get tired of hearing things like that. It's just getting crazy now, you know? The offers are still coming in and I'm like, when are they gonna stop?” he said with a laugh. “Don't get me wrong, it's a blessing. I couldn't be happier for him. I couldn’t be prouder of him. It's just getting a little crazy right now.”

With that, I let an exasperated and admittedly somewhat overwhelmed dad get back to his family. Back to his son and noises that sounded like running water and clinking dishes in the background. Here’s hoping they can tune out the noise of recruiting at least for a few minutes. Just long enough to appreciate the joy of spending some time together even if it is over a sink full of dishes.

Daniels plans to take his time

Every recruit and recruitnik alike knows how crazy college football recruiting can become. For some it's crazier than others and for some the 'crazy' is what makes the experience so much fun. Vernon Hills (Illinois) wide receiver prospect Davaris Daniels would be one of the 'some' on both counts.

Conner Crowell is torching an Oregon trail!

Settle down tree huggers, it’s just a figure of speech.  You can take Smokey the bear off your speed dial now.

What I mean to say is that Crowell is on a hot streak right now.  He’s nearly cemented his position as one of the top 20 performers on the 2010 Nike Combine..

1. ND feels really good about Bubba Starling but I have no idea who the main competition would be, could you help me out there?
-wicket

Notre Dame should feel really good about it's chances right now and wherever Starling ends up will be getting him for baseball as well, so that's going to be a huge factor.
