Springs, MS wide receiver Joe Morrow is starting to get
a sense of what the next 9 months or so of his life are
going to be like. That’s how long he expects his process
of picking a college and football program to take. “I’m
planning on taking all of my visits but I really don’t
have any schools in mind yet. I’m trying to wait til the
end, maybe a couple weeks before signing day. If not it
will be on signing day,” said Morrow.
The schools looking to secure one of his 5 visits are
varied and reach from the in state SEC powers to nearly
every corner of the country, “My offers are Alabama,
Auburn, Southern Miss, ‘Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and
LSU. Ole Miss and Mississippi St are recruiting me the
hardest. I talk to coaches at those schools a lot. Ole
Miss started looking at me after my junior season and
LSU was about that time too. Ole Miss was the first
school to offer me back around September and LSU was my
most recent offer. But I’m getting letters from
everywhere. I’m getting a bunch of mail from Michigan,
UCLA, Notre Dame, just all around the country. My old
coach from peewee league mentioned Ohio State and I was
like ‘yeah I like them’. So I gave him a tape of my
highlights and he sent it up there to them. Ever since
then they’ve been sending me letters and everything. He
tells me I’d be a good fit for up there.”
Plus, the pace of recruiting is really starting to pick
up. “They’re coming in bunches now, like 20 a day.
Handwritten letters, invites to come watch a practice,
it’s just crazy. From assistant coaches, head coaches,
recruiting coordinators. I’m just having fun with it all
though. I’m looking at everybody. I feel I owe it to
anybody who gives me a look to give them a look. I’m
just looking for a place I can fit in.”
As for things he’s looking for to help him find that
good fit, Morrow had this to say, “I want a place where
I can have a good chance to play early and compete for a
spot. I’m not trying to go to a place and demand to play
early or anything. I just want a chance to compete and
try to help my team win a national championship. But,
I’m just going to have fun wherever I go. I’m just a
fun, funny guy to be around. I keep it loose.”
Unlike some big time recruits, Morrow wants to stay open
to all possibilities when it comes to position and
schemes, “Sometimes schools tell me how I can play both
ways. It’s mostly just for receiver but most of the ones
that want me to play both ways talk about safety too.
Like Notre Dame is one of the schools that wants to play
me both ways.”
On offense, the interest does center on receiver but
don’t make the mistake of assuming Morrow is anything
less than an asset in the running game, “I’m looking for
a balanced offense. I mean, I don’t want to go to a
school where they just pound it, pound it, pound it. But
I’m more like a possession receiver. I have the speed to
get away from the defender but I’m the guy who’s going
to make the tough catches. Some receivers I talk to,
like other recruits say they really don’t like to block.
But I just like to play physical. I like blocking so I
know I need to stay in the weight room and keep getting
strong. I mean, my school runs the triple option so it’s
really a must. Whenever I do get the ball in my hands, I
just try to make something happen. That’s my attitude.
Whoever has the biggest heart will win it, you know?”
Morrow also has some criteria in mind for coaches who
are recruiting him, “I’m just looking for a coach I can
connect with. Someone who knows when it’s time for
football, when it’s time to be serious, but he can still
kid around some too. Like my coach now, he has fun with
us and all but he knows when it’s time to get serious.”
With all that said, the question is, has any staff or
program distanced itself in his eyes? “I really don’t
have a top 3 or anything right now. I’m just wide open
on everybody. My mom does.” He said with a laugh. “She
really likes Ole Miss. They both (parents) really like
LSU too. I would say Ole Miss, LSU, and Auburn are their
top 3 for me. But I’m still just taking it all in. I’m
ready to hear from anybody.”
He doesn’t expect to fall prey to high pressure tactics
or any other common pitfalls that recruits encounter
either, “I went down to Miami for a visit, for some camp
thing. Some dude there committed to Miami cause he said
his phone just blew up. He got tired of it so he said he
just had to commit so they’ll leave him alone. Some CB,
I think his name was Albert something. I just don’t get
that. I mean it’s all good to me. It’s not like a bad
thing to have all these coaches wanting me for their
team. When I go to Ole Miss and me and Coach Dickerson
(receiver coach) always talk a lot. He told me how some
guys just can’t handle the pressure. But that’s not me.
I’m a people person so I’m loving it right now.”
It sounds like he will be for a while too. Possibly all
the way up to signing day next year. Regardless if it
takes that long or not, you can be sure that Joe Morrow
will have his eyes wide open and looking forward the
entire time.

Every recruit and recruitnik alike knows how
crazy college football recruiting can become.
For some it's crazier than others and for some
the 'crazy' is what makes the experience so much
fun. Vernon Hills (Illinois) wide receiver
prospect Davaris Daniels would be one of the
'some' on both counts.
Settle down tree huggers, it’s just a figure of speech. You can take Smokey the bear off your speed dial
now.
What I mean to say is that Crowell is on a hot streak
right now.
He’s nearly cemented his position as one of the top 20
performers on the 2010 Nike Combine..
1. ND feels really good about
Bubba Starling but I have no idea who the main
competition would be, could you help me out there? -wicket
Notre Dame should feel really
good about it's chances right now and wherever Starling
ends up will be getting him for baseball as well, so
that's going to be a huge factor. Charles Drake article
