Versatile DB favors three
By Kevin Ledford/ThaRinger.Com
Christion
Jones is one of the top defensive back prospects in the
Class of 2011. He plays safety at Minor High School
(Adamsville, AL) but his versatility has schools
recruiting him at both safety and cornerback as well as
a return specialist. The 5’10.5”, 175-pounder is a very
instinctive player with good speed and quickness that
excels in coverage. Last season he recorded 65 tackles
and 7 interceptions while adding 7 touchdowns in a
variety of ways; which led to Jones being named the 2009
West Defensive Player of the Year (over AU signee,
LaDarius Owens) by the Birmingham News.
He currently holds offers from Auburn, Tennessee,
Vanderbilt, Louisville, Washington, Georgia Tech, Notre
Dame, and Memphis and though he really likes Louisville,
there are three schools that stick out.
“Auburn, Tennessee and Florida because they’re all in
need of secondary players and they’re recruiting very
deep on that so I’m just trying to pick out of those
three really where I want to fit in at.”
Each of the three are recruiting him with different
positions and roles in mind and subsequently, there are
different reasons for which he likes each program.
“Auburn is recruiting me at corner, Tennessee is
recruiting me as both and Florida is recruiting me at
safety. About Auburn, I like their versatility. I can
play kick returner and punt returner physically in their
system. And Tennessee, I like their style of play and I
can do a lot of blitzing and stuff and Florida, they’re
looking for a cover guy and I think I can cover real
well. I feel I’ve developed a good bond with Coach
Heater from Florida. And Coach Trooper from Auburn.”
All three of Jones’ schools of interest are recruiting
him hard, but one perhaps more so than the others,
“Right now, it’s gonna have to be my top three schools I
have: Florida, Tennessee and Auburn and the most out of
those, it’d be Auburn.”
This past weekend, Christion made the trip down to
Gainesville, Florida to take in one of the Gators’
spring practice sessions, “It went very good. I watched
the practice. Good practice, very energized. They gave
me a tour around the whole campus, what freshmen do in
their first year, just a lot of things.”
Jones will be a busy guy this summer since he
participates in AAU basketball, but he plans to take in
a couple of football camps along the way. “My plan this
year is to go to a camp at Notre Dame at the end of
June, they’ve offered me. I think I’m gonna go down to a
Tennessee camp and then after that, I play AAU
basketball so I’m just gonna keep lifting weights and
playing basketball.”
As far as a timeline for a commitment, Christion isn’t
in a hurry. “I’m just gonna take my time. I’ll probably
know by mid-season of my senior year or the end of the
season.”
“I just want to fit in. I do want to play a little
special teams at kick returner, punt returner and just
hard work. Keep working,” he adds.
When asked what Christion’s goals for his senior season
were, he left no doubt as to what his primary objective
was and that’s to win. “Championship. Got to get one
before I graduate,” Jones stated emphatically and
without hesitation.
In closing, since Christion is also a basketball player
and the NCAA tournament was going on as we spoke, I
asked him who his pick to win the national championship
was and uncovered an interesting nugget, “I’m picking
Kentucky. Kansas just lost so I’m picking Kentucky to go
all the way with it.”
“I actually played against Eric Bledsoe when he was at
Parker,” Jones said referring to one of Kentucky’s
dynamic freshman guards. Bledsoe shot 8 for 9 from
three-point range in the Wildcats’ 100-71 opening round
obliteration of East Tennessee State.
Christion is rated as a 5.8 / 4 star recruit and comes
in as the #7 safety prospect in the nation and #168
overall in the most recent TR 250.

Daniels plans to take his time

Every recruit and recruitnik alike knows how
crazy college football recruiting can become.
For some it's crazier than others and for some
the 'crazy' is what makes the experience so much
fun. Vernon Hills (Illinois) wide receiver
prospect Davaris Daniels would be one of the
'some' on both counts.
