Whitehead looking in-state

By Miles Fomby

When asked about his highlight of the Mississippi State junior day trip, he commented on the Mississippi State vs. Auburn basketball game and Coach Melvin Smith’s [Mississippi State’s cornerbacks coach] prediction.

“At the game coach Smith sat with me, my mom, and my step dad. He broke down recruiting a little bit more for us. I really did not know he was a basketball fan. He told me with 10 minutes on the clock that Mississippi State would win in overtime. That is the guy I am going to be around a lot.”

Mississippi State ended up winning the basketball game against Auburn 85-75 in overtime later that night.

His comments on the Ole Miss Junior Day also surrounded his recruiting coordinator and Ole Miss’s cornerbacks coach Chris Vaughn.

“It was a little more out there. I have never been there before. I have never met any of the coaches. I really did not know anyone other than coach [Houston] Nutt. Their coaching staff is real friendly though. They have a family atmosphere that was the big thing for me.”

“Coach Chris Vaughn, he coaches the corners. He is a real cool guy to be around. He compared playing cornerback to being a cheetah. At first I said I did not think it was a good comparison. After he broke it down, saying they have to fight for their food, be fast, and they are out there by themselves, I told him he was right.”

Heading into his senior season at Amanda Elzy High School in Green Wood, Mississippi, Jermaine would like to work on not getting caught sleeping on his pass responsibilities while playing in the secondary.

“If I know the other team is going to run the ball all night, I might end up not being on my job all night. I might get caught cheating. That is really the only thing I need to work on.”
